Mohawk talks flooring trends at KBIS2016

Part three in my continuing trend series from the 2016 Kitchen and Bath show is flooring. Mohawk Flooring was one of the generous sponsors for the Modenus  BlogTourVegas and who better than to discus flooring trends than the largest flooring manufacture in the world. Karastan carpets are a division of Mohawk Flooring and it came as no big surprise that cream and gray are still the number one seller for both flooring and carpets.

Large scale geometric patterns are especially popular for carpets as well as dense low pile. For wood flooring or wood look-a-like floors, wider planks with a distressed look or wire brushed texture are Mohawks’s best sellers. The one thing I noticed with all the flooring at the show is that the wood grain is clearly visible. Bye bye dark stained espresso floors.

For tiles, large scale rectangular tiles are hugely popular

as are over-sized square tiles. Floor tiles 18″ square up to 24″ square are hot, hot hot!

Patterned flooring has also been trending but for me personally I see this as simply “trendy”. Unless it’s a smaller space like a mud room or bathroom I would caution my clients against it.

So if you are reading this and thinking, I would never want gray floors, you’re in luck because the folks at Mohawk told us that beige, cream and brown are making a comeback. I know in my part of New England brown and beige never completely fell out of style so many reading this news will feel right on trend!

Trends are fun and it’s good to know what buyers are looking for if you are building or remodeling but bottom line is that flooring is something that should be chosen based on the style and age of your home and certainly not chosen based on what’s trending today. There is no way you will want to rip up or refinish your gray floors that were installed in 2016 when red or honey or pickled or whatever floor color comes into favor next. Think timeless and you can never go wrong. Here are a few of my picks from Mohawk.

I believe you can never go wrong with a mid tone brown. A gray carpet on top will follow the trend but once gray is over, your floors will still be in style.

Gray (cool color) vs beige (warm color) is an interesting question, and one I have to think about … or ask someone like you who’s better at colors that tie a room together. The question for me is do you match cool grays with cool colors like my blue living room … and beige with red, both warm? Or do you do the reverse, using beige to warm up a room with blue walls? Guess I can think of a lot of questions to ask but don’t have answers. My thought is when I do get around to the floors (after other remodeling projects), I’d like to go with tile for durability … but like the idea of tile that looks like wood, LOL.
