Five days and counting

I am so excited! I feel like a little girl going to Disney for the first time because in just five days I will be flying out to attend what is simply referred to as “High Point” or “Market”. Held in High Point NC, this event is the largest industry trade show in the world. All the top furniture, accessory, and lighting companies introduce their newest products to the trade, while celebrity designers host parties, seminars and “meet and greets” throughout the thousands of show rooms.

Social media is all abuzz with which parties to attend and which vendors are “must see” however the number one question is “what are you wearing? Yes, crazy I know but hey, this is the design world equivalent to attending the Oscars and one must “dress”. Of course this whole wardrobe dilemma is complicated that by fact that the hotels are all far away (45 mins. drive) so once you leave in the morning there is no going back to change. This means, walking through show rooms for 6-10 hours a day, followed by evening cocktail parties. SOOO what’s a girl to do?

In my case, I made a call to my good friend and wardrobe stylist Susan Kanoff, the owner of A great New Look . Susan is down to earth, kind, and somehow makes what could be a very unpleasant experience for someone like myself (who is not confident in either my looks or body) actually feel good about clothes. I don’t know how she does it but she does.

Susan worked her magic last week and now all my stress about what to wear is completely gone. Before we met (in my closet) Susan had “pre-shopped” for me and sent me a number of online links to dresses, jackets and shoes that she thought would be good for the trip. I ordered most of them so we started out our session with me trying on everything and Susan either giving her approval or disapproval of fit and over all look. Luckily everything Susan had me order was free shipping and return so I ordered WAY more than I needed and we had plenty to choose from.

We spent the morning putting together all my outfits and Susan accessorized everything with shoes, bags and jewelry.  So that I wouldn’t forget what goes with what, she photographed everything for a style book right on my cell phone. At High Point, all I have to do is scroll through my cell phone and choose an outfit. So easy!

These are a few possibilities Susan put together for me.

outfit #1

I loved how she made it so easy for me by accessorizing everything.

same dress different look!

So in five days I will be there soaking it all in and sharing all my exciting new discoveries of trends and products with my clients and my readers. If you want to see a bit of High Point for yourself be sure to follow me on Instagram and Facebook where I will be posting photos and updates throughout the week.

How about you? have you heard of or been to Market at High Point?

Have you ever worked with a stylist?

Hi Linda – have a great time. From my last experience at Highpoint 3 years ago, I can say – wear flat comfy walking shoes. Also, it was 87 when I was there. It had been snowing here in Boston on Friday, and I was sweltering in HP on Monday. Have fun! Linda

Thanks Linda. I was actually planning on emailing you to see if you were going. The weather is a huge factor..esp. when trying to plan my clothes. Fingers crossed it is not as hot as 87 but warmer than here!

Great post, Linda. I’m going to file this advice away for when I finally make my first High Point trip — maybe in the fall. You’re going to look wonderful, and I can’t wait to follow your adventure online. Have fun!

The wardrobe looks fabulous! I will be carrying my green handbag, as well :). I am very jealous – and very much at a loss for what to wear. At 6+ months pregnant, I’m not loving what I see in my own closet (in fact, I’m quite hating it all right now!). Comfy shoes go without saying (all that I own, really), but this reminds me I may need to bite the bullet and buy a new outfit or two. I’m so bad with apparel/fashion – when I’m back into normal attire, I will have to get in touch with Susan for a style intervention! Will message you today; hope to meet up this weekend!

    Hi Ladies!
Linda, it was so much fun putting your outfits together. You’re going to look amazing–not just because of the clothes , but because you’re gorgeous to begin with! However I do understand the stress of packing for an important trip though. Here are a few tips:
    1. Keep your color palette simple and use accessories to change things up. Jewelry, a fabulous scarf, pashmina, bags, etc. will give you different looks plus take up little space in your suitcase.
    2. Bring clothes that are wrinkle free—so important for a trip like High Point where you’ll be in the same outfit all day and night.
    3. Jacket are also a great way to change things up.
    4. One of the most important wardrobe investment that you can make is shoes. Your feet are important–take good care of them!
Hope you’ll follow me on FB at A Great New Look and on my blog at http://www.agreatnewlook.com

Kelly, I would love to work with you. I can do distance coaching if you need a few ideas for the trip.

    Have fun!!!
    Susan

I’m no clothes horse by any means, however dressing one’s self is a lot like decorating a room. Keep style, function and scale all in order and you’ll do quite well 🙂 I would love to attend Market some day….but for sure I’ll have to buy a whole new wardrobe. Your new clothes look great!

Thanks so much Connie.I totally agree with you but personally I find it easier said than done 🙂

Susan is amazing! Great looks. My best advice for High Point is your shoes! The place is huge and you will be on your feet all day. Great experience, so glad you get to go! Have a great time and take lots of pictures!
