The hot new “love it” or “love it not” color for interiors

Tuesday I spent the day at the Boston Design Center. I hadn’t been in for a few weeks and as someone who is so tuned into color I couldn’t help but notice the hot new color that was EVERYWHERE! It seems Purple is everyone’s darling right now. I only saw a few show rooms that didn’t feature purple, either as a wall color, a furniture color or in accessories. Here are a few photos I snapped with my cell phone to give you an idea of what will soon be in a store near you.

Stepping off the elevator I was blown away by this rich purple accent wall at Scalamandre. The silk purple floral and solid purple pillows tied in nicely with the wall color.

Purple leather chair at Kravet

I spotted this gorgeous purple leather chair at the Kravet show room and this purple velvet one at Duralee (swoon).

Several of the showrooms featured purple sofas for those willing to make a major color commitment including this one below at Grand Rapids.

Kravet also had a purple sofa but leaning more toward magenta. I loved the art work above and the chartreuse green wall.

For those who like purple but are not so sure they want to make such a big commitment there were plenty of pillows. Using pillows is a great way to be on trend without making a major investment.

This purple velvet and ikat were two of my favorites… also at Kravet.

Another purple a bit more on the magenta side was spotted at Duralee.

This piece almost came home with me as it was a floor sample and would look so nice at the foot of my bed.

Having studied color and color psychology  I know purple is one of those controversial colors that people either love…or not. Studies show that purple is most popular among pre-adolescent girls and creative types but it doesn’t get much love in home interiors except maybe bedrooms…until now.

UPDATE: Just as I was getting ready to publish this post Pantone announced their 2014 Color Of The Year….Radiant Orchid.

I would love to hear what you think about purple…love it or love it not?

If you would like help incorporating purple or choosing any other color, give me a call.

I love the velvet pillows and chair as well, and I would definitely say that I am NOT a purple girl, unless we are talking WINE 😉
2 of my clients over the past year or so have gone with a deep purple accent wall in the bedroom…it was pretty luscious I would say!

Meredith, wine yes, bedroom yes, orchid on the walls?? Most likely…not.

Definitely going to pass on the “Radiant Orchid” that is exactly the shade of purple I like the least! feels very matronly or conversely….too girly girly, at least in this part of the world…I maybe could see it in a warmer climate as a hit of fresh color on an unexpected chair or something….in some of the rooms that are featured in “House of Turquoise” for instance….

Great photos. Love the end of the bed bench. I’m a strong colour lover but for pieces I’m going to spend a lot of money on it’s got to be neutral. I change wall colours and pillows way too often to be able to live with a purple. Purchased an “I love you sofa” once (and the sofa’s you’ve added here fall into that category for me-love them all) but I regretted it six months later when I wanted to change up the decor – those pieces are too bossy to allow for many other loves (accessories and wall colours).

Thanks for commenting Beverly. I tend to agree with you as far as the big investment pieces. I too go for neutral and then play around with pillows art work and accessories.I am too restless to live with one color for very long….although I am still thinking about that purple bench for the foot of the bed 🙂

How wonderful for you to notice the hot colour of the year, and just as you are posting Pantone announces it! Great job – and my vote is a YAY!!

    I really dislike this color!

not surprised Phil as most men are not fans of purple

Linda, I think this is a tough color to invest in unless you’re have loved & lived with the color for years. I just bought a purple sweater set, wore it yesterday and it’s like an audition … will I really like it. Sweaters aren’t as expensive as a great piece of furniture or the time it takes to repaint a wall if it doesn’t work. Let’s see

Tina, just because purple is hot right now, in 12 months it will be a whole new color…so buyers beware. I personally like starting with a few purple pillows or maybe a purple vase or accessory. I would caution my clients against investing in a major furniture piece unless they are 100% committed to the color for the next 10 years.

Love it!!!!! I’m thrilled that it is the color for 2014. Purple has so many qualities and it can go from masculine, to sophisticated, to whimsical.

Linda, great post! I have had a love affair with the colour purple for a long time and I have it used as accents in my basement. Not suprised to see this hue as Pantone Colour of the year, but very excited! Cheers for sharing your pics!

Linda, So I have to ask where (what store) did you find all these furniture pieces in various shades of purple? I was in NYC and afraid it was disappointing to see everything neutral except accent pillows

    • Linda Holt Reply

Tina, these were all in different show rooms at the Boston Design center. They were at Kravet, Lee Jofa, Duralee, and Grand Rapids.

Hello Linda, would you be so kind as to let me know the artist of the painting of trees, above the purple sofa, or where I can find it? Thank you!

    • Linda Holt Reply

      Hi Mile,
I wish I could help you out but I don’t know who the artist is. It was hanging on the wall at a showroom I visited a few years back.
