My Shocking Christmas Confession with Photos!

Several years back when I was still working full time as a photographer I used to have the most beautifully decorated house at Christmas. My photography business slowed down right after Thanksgiving and I had a full month to decorate, shop, wrap, and bake. I would spend hours at the kitchen table creating Martha Stewart inspired Christmas crafts and searching through my cookbooks to bake complicated and jaw dropping sugar creations. One year I made 10 fresh cranberry Christmas trees to give as teacher’s gifts. I can still remember my finger pain from pushing all those pins through hundreds of fresh cranberries.

Now that I make my living as a decorator I am so busy this time of the year with clients that I have no time to decorate my own home. We did get the tree up but as far as shopping, wrapping, baking and decorating…to say I am behind is an understatement. As a blogger however, I feel huge pressure to show you photos of my spectacularly decorated tree and my perfectly decorated home. In fact, for the very first time in my entire adult life I have a shocking confession… My house is not decorated!

Yup, less than a week away from the big day and not a sprig of holly in sight.  So to take pressure off  myself and maybe help some of you feel less guilty if you too are in a similar “undecorated” situation I am going to bare my soul and show you what my house REALLY looks like.

My kitchen table that I wished looked like this:

Home DIT

actually looks like this….covered with grocery bags and a wet paint chair on top.

You see, I am in the middle of painting two kitchen chairs for a client that will be delivered on Friday.

My dinning table that I would love to have look like this

actually looks like this

Really bad…I know. This mess is actually caused by my son who has just launched a new Boston food delivery service. He and his business partners have been working 18-20 hour days and splitting their time between crashing at the office and working on the website at my dining room table.

Our presents under our Christmas tree which should look like this

actually look like this

Totally embarrassing I know…so as you can see…I have some work ahead of me. My last client appointment is this coming Saturday so you can only imagine what I will be doing Sunday and Monday….or not.

I did have to laugh though as my poor husband in an attempt to help decorate, did this on our deck chair with the left over branches cut off the Christmas tree.

I haven’t had a chance to ask him but I’m wondering if he saw this image on my Pinterest board? Actually, I doubt he even knows what Pinterest is.

I hope you don’t judge me and I hope you got a laugh over my shocking Christmas confession. (In full disclosure I do plan on taking the presents out of the Amazon boxes and wrapping them)

Next year I vow to have a beautifully decorated house…with photos…I promise!

So are you done with your decorating? Anyone in the same situation as me? I would love to hear.

You make me smile, Linda! Thanks for your honesty – the truth is, if I hadn’t been planning my big Downton Abbey party, my Christmas decorating may have never happened. Parties always put the pressure on to decorate. If it makes you feel any better, my neighbor came over an hour ago while I was working on the computer on my bed. She walked into the chaos that my bedroom currently is (boxes and gifts and clothes and junk everywhere) and said, “Oh, I feel so much better seeing what a wreck your bedroom is!” She really meant it, I think it really made her feel better about the condition of her house, haha. Whatever I can do to help! I told her I’ll call her to come over the next time I was stressed to the max and coming apart at the seams so she can feel better that my life isn’t so “perfect.” Cheers!!!

Kristie, so funny you say that about getting ready for your party because that is exactly why I didn’t decorate this year. We are not hosting Christmas so I figure …who will know or care? Next year though I think I will do it up big time and plan a big holiday party. That will keep me on track. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Real life doesn’t always make the best pictures. I like your tree pictures with the amazon boxes because that is exactly what my tree looks like. My son is in the military and he has sent all of his gifts to our family. Now I look forward to Saturday when he actually gets here. I wouldn’t get too stressed out, it is not really about all the pretty stuff anyway, though it is great to look at. Enjoy your family and the reason for Christmas! Merry Christmas!

thanks Lisa, you are so’s not about anything but family and we are all together this Christmas, healthy and happy so that is all I need. Merry Christmas with your son and family!

Whew, what a relief, I’m not the only one. We finally just got the tree up, but it’s only 1/2 decorated and that’s the way it’ll probably stay. Don’t know why, I’m just not into decorating this year, probably on Christmas eve, I’ll look around wishing I dolled up the house a little more! lol.

first year ever for me Jil. I guess this means next year I will feel the need to go all out. I laughed when I read a blog today and the decorator showed photos of her master bedroom tree decorated with over 300 tiny angels. That is when I decided to bare my soul and show the other side of decorating.

Thanks Ann, I just snapped after seeing one to many perfectly decorated homes. You and I know the time required to achieve that and this year I just didn’t have it.

You always make me laugh! The husband decorating is the best! I was like that last year and only put up a paper Christmas tree on the wall. I really went all out decorating this year though because I did absolutely nothing for Fall or Thanksgiving. Glad to hear everyone will be home for Christmas at your house! Merry Christmas Linda!!

Thanks Kelly, next year I’ll do it up big. Merry Christmas and let’s plan to get together early in the new year.

Linda, Thanks for sharing. I too do not have ANY Christmas decorations this year. Oh, does the one pointsettia on my coffee table count? I too am not hosting this year and with just the two of us at home, that’s all that matters. We’ll be visiting the kids on Christmas eve and that’s the best part of the holiday. Merry Christmas my friend!

Merry Christmas to you too Betty..and I think there are many others in our same situation with the whole decorating stress and not enough time.

  9. [...] New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday with family and friends. In a follow up to my previous post...

What a great post, Linda! I’ve been totally AWOL from blogging and blog reading just trying to figure it all out. I did get some decorating done, but that was the trade off. It’s incredible pressure to ‘do it all’, and I’m not so sure it’s a good thing to even try. The Holidays are what memories are made of, and we want the memories to be good, right? PS – love the orange chair!
